For all of its rewards, travel will inevitably result in frustrations, disappointments, inconveniences, and much worse — it just comes with the territory when you log a lot of miles.
When you find yourself in the midst of a nightmare travel experience — whether it’s theft, delay, weather, whatever — it can feel like a lot of pressure to try to right the listing ship. But the best thing you can do to keep yourself and your travel companions sane — and even laughing — through the discomfort? Just accept it, embrace it, and even find the humor in it. You’re making memories after all.
“Traveling is hard. Traveling is always going to trigger things. Traveling is always going to create problems,” she said. “When I was with my family in Tokyo recently, we found a New York Times travel [guide book about] what to do on Saturday in Tokyo, and we tried to do it on a Wednesday.” Spoiler: It didn’t work.
“We had two umbrellas for four people, it was pouring rain, and nothing that’s open on Saturday is open on Wednesday in Tokyo,” she said. “So everywhere we went, things were closed and we were miserable and cranky.”
And that’s no fun. But Lisa explained that the moment she just embraced the silly drama of it all was the moment everything turned around. “At some point, when we were completely drenched in water, I just said, ‘This is I think the worst travel day ever!’ And we just all started laughing, and then it was the greatest day ever.”
The takeaway? “Sometimes through the hardship, that’s where the juice is. That’s where it is!”
Real talk, Lisa.
