Anyone who’s flown domestic recently knows the experience can be filled with indignities, sure — but pleasant surprises too. And if you want to maximize your chance of a positive flight experience, you might consider flying one of the top airlines in the U.S., as named by The Points Guy. According to the travel platform's just-announced annual rankings, the best airline in America is Alaska Airlines for the second year in a row.
The Points Guy’s team of aviation experts ranked the country’s airlines using methodology based on specific criteria and data, like on-time arrival rates, passenger complaints, cabin comfort, and baggage issues.
Alaska managed to come in tops despite the ongoing merger with Virgin America; still Alaska scored consistently well across categories, ranking in the top three for airfare, on-time arrivals, customer satisfaction, baggage, and a great frequent-flyer program.
Southwest Airlines followed Alaska Airlines, with Delta, United, and Frontier rounding out the top five ranking.
The worst airlines in America, according to The Points Guy rankings? American Airlines, Spirit, JetBlue, and Hawaiian Airlines all ranked lowest over to the last 12 months.
“We take pride in the data we’ve assembled from sources across the industry and largely based all criteria on what we believe regular passengers care about most. Alaska Airlines, with Southwest and Delta to follow, are clearly doing it right,” said The Points Guy founder and C.E.O. Brian Kelly in a release.
Also notable: United only dropped two slots despite widespread and intensely negative PR for a hostile — even bloody — interaction with an overbooked passenger. Southwest bumped all the way up from sixth place to second this year. And JetBlue fell most significantly this year, from fourth to eighth place, with performance falling in areas like on-time arrivals and overall customer satisfaction.
