Casual Instagrammers: Please sit back, relax, and feast your eyes on the major pitfall from which your nonchalant social media use has spared you. A wannabe travel influencer, Lissette Calveiro, acquired $10,000 in debt trying to maintain Insta-worthy status, she told The New York Post. How? By living a lifestyle she couldn't actually afford ... for virtual followers and "likes."

Calveiro bought everything from luxury clothing to pricey plane tickets to maintain her Instagram image.

"I was living above my means," she said. In her quest to come across as well-traveled to her growing list of followers (she has 25,000 at the time of writing), Calveiro — a 26-year-old Miami native living in New York City — went on $200 monthly shopping sprees and booked one trip per month to trendy locales like the Bahamas, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.

She did this for a year, according to the The New York Post article, apparently with an even more granular mission in mind: collecting Snapchat geofilters. Calveiro told the publication she considered the filters to be "digital passport stamps" and "wanted to collect at least 12." (Hence one trip every month for a total of 12 after a year.)

They weren't exactly flash sale tickets, either.

A round-trip ticket to Austin, Texas in November 2016 wound up costing her a whopping $700. It was for a Sia concert.

Calveiro is telling her story to highlight the financial burden many influencers face.

"Nobody talks about finances on Instagram. It worries me how much I see girls care about image," she said, underscoring that she regrets spending so much. "I could've invested that money in something."

Calveiro certainly isn't the first person to spend big bucks for influencer status. According to Fashionista, one would need to spend around $31,400 annually "to maintain the standards of physical beauty represented daily in our Instagram feeds." And that's not even including the editing and photography skills required to snap — or, in some case, fake — the perfect shot.
