It was a story that captivated imaginations around the world: Women who Instagrammed an over-the-top luxurious cruise... until they got busted for smuggling 200 pounds of cocaine worth almost $22 million.
And now, the saga has a new development, as 23-year-old Canadian citizen Melina Roberce has pleaded guilty to smuggling the cocaine on a 51-day cruise that sailed from Southampton, England to Sydney, Australia in August 2016.
This follows a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence handed down in November for one of her accomplices, a 29-year-old ex-pornographic actress named Isabelle Lagace. An anonymous source told Daily Mail that Roberce is a "superficial woman always turned on by money and on the look-out for a sugar daddy."
The publication reported that it's considered the largest drug bust on a passenger ship or plane ever in Australia.
The heist was brought down in part by Roberce sharing (since deleted) snaps of her epic $15,000 vacation on board the MS Sea Princess on Instagram. Once they docked in Sydney, they were greeted by border agents, sniffing dogs and the Australian Federal Police, who were tipped off by Canadian and American sources who saw her making moves on the 'Gram.
According to Business Insider, Australia has been a desirable market for Mexican cartels to break into after several Colombian operations were taken down.
Late last year, Roberce pleaded guilty to importing “a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug,” but said an unnamed person forced her to do so to wipe out a $20,000 debt, according to the Daily Mail.
“I have embarrassed my family, my friends, myself,” she said at her sentencing. “It pains me to know that my defining years of womanhood will be spent in prison halfway around the world.”
