A hotel must possess a few attributes if it's to legitimately be considered one of the world's best. It has to offer luxe amenities and excellent service — and it helps if it is pleasingly Instagrammable and has a great pool, too. One thing it doesn't need, however, is a hefty price tag, as a recent report from Tripadvisor proves.
For its 2018 Travelers' Choice Awards, the travel company went through millions of reviews and opinions collected on its site in a single year in order to spotlight the best hotels worldwide, based on service, amenities, and overall experience. While the top spot for a U.S property went to the upscale Nantucket Hotel and Resort (which averages $530 per night), the worldwide winner was a rather more low-key hotel in Cambodia.
Viroth's Hotel is located in a leafy neighborhood in Old Town Siem Reap, 20 minutes from the ancient temples of Angkor Wat. The chic, mid-century modern influenced hotel features lots of glass and living plant walls. Rooms are decorated with jewel colors and local Khmer antiques; come with private terraces, and offer either a view of the tropical garden or palm-fringed, mosaic-tiled pool.
Sound like a worth-it splurge? Well, hold up. It gets even better. The average rate for a room is a mere $128 per night, and can go for as low as $90. And that perfectly reasonable rate includes a big à la carte breakfast served in the chic poolside dining area that includes French toast, pancakes, banana cake, fresh fruit, cooked-to-order eggs and noodle soup, as well as a tropical fruit platter in your room.
