Proof That Mules Are *the* Transitional Shoe for Fall

A piece so universally loved that it’s been the most on-trend shoe design for two years and running: the mule.

By Katherine Kluznik

Welcome to the cusp of autumn — aka the most frustrating time of year. I don’t want to be the one to break it to you, but the next four to six weeks are going to be tough. Very tough. At least when it comes to fashion.

Here's why: You will wake up one morning in the not-too-distant future, look at your weather app and exclaim, Sixty-two degrees! That *definitely* means I can finally break out my new wooly sweater, suedette booties — maybe even my new trench! And you will be totally correct about this ... until approximately 4 hours later, when a 20-degree temperature surge means you now look like you spent your lunch break at hot yoga.

There’s one fashion item, though that actually is transitional. A piece so universally loved that it’s been the most on-trend shoe design for two years and running: the mule. This miracle hybrid of a shoe works for summer. It works for fall. It’ll even carry you through winter (just pair it with thick tights or cozy socks, but let's not even go to that dark place just yet).

And when it comes to mules, there’s certainly no shortage of options right now — whether flats or heels are your idea of the ideal iteration. While you could splurge-out on a pair of Gucci’s $890 fur-lined 'Princetown' mules, which have been trending for a couple years now, I think I have a better idea. Why not pack your virtual cart with all 10 pairs of perfect (and perfectly affordable) fall mules ahead and pocket the $139.80 in change?
