How to Keep Your Skin Clear and Glowing All Summer Long

Hot summer days can wreak havoc on your skin — follow these dermatologist-approved tips to keep your complexion looking bright and refreshed.

By Chantel Morel

There are so many reasons to love summer: beach trips, family BBQs, and plenty of sunny outings. One thing we don’t love about this hot season: summer breakouts. That's right, this wonderful time of the year filled with outdoor adventures just may be the culprit behind those recent blemishes on your face.

“Hot weather means that we are sweating more than we do during other times in the year. Plus, humidity can trap oil and dirt on the skin leading to breakouts in some people,” says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in the Department of Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

How does one begin to tackle this beauty concern? Building a proper skincare regimen as well as taking care of your skin from the inside out by making healthier lifestyle choices is certainly a great start. Below, you'll find a few tips to help keep your complexion blemish-free, so you can get your glow on all summer long.

No.1 Find the right cleanser

A multitasking cleanser will be your best friend. "Look for a cleanser that contains salicylic acid to help remove excess oil and exfoliate dead cells from the surface of the skin to keep your pores clear," explains Dr. Zeichner. He recommends AcneFree Daily Skin Therapy Wash.

No.2 Beware of sweaty clothes

"Running outside in warm weather is a favorite activity during the summer, however leaving your sweaty clothes on after the workout can increase your risk of a breakout. Sweat, oil, and dirt become trapped under the workout clothes. Make sure to take them off and shower as soon as you can," shares Dr. Zeichner. You'll also want to clean your hats and sunglasses regularly as well "so that dirt isn't trapped against your skin when you wear them,” added Dr. Zeichner.

No.3 Use oil-free sunscreen

Dr. Zeichner says that using the wrong sunscreen can also lead to breakouts, especially if you're predisposed to acne: "Make sure to look for an oil-free formulation that is labeled as non-comedogenic, for example, Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunscreen."

Bonus Tip: Achieving radiant skin isn’t just about using the best skincare products or keeping your skin clean. Maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle can help, too. Try incorporating healthier choices into your daily routine like opting for the perfect salad for lunch when you’re on the go (a Wendy’s salad is always a yummy option). Beauty sleep is also a must. Most importantly, drink lots of water.
