It Doesn't Matter if You're Good Looking

Tyson Beckford explains what it takes to be a model.

Let's get right into the latest episode and talk about the models' performances. First off we have Branden, who worked with Colin.

Branden is growing, he's getting better. His weakness is his walk. He doesn't stand up straight. He walks and his arms kind of stand out like he's a big muscle man. That's his main weakness.

He's great with his photos, but he wasn't as strong this week. He also has that thing where he has a muscle-man type walk. I tell him to relax his arms and his shoulders.

What did you think of his incorporation of cricket on the runway?

I thought it was great because one of the judges is British and one of the judges is from South Africa, two countries that play cricket. I also understood because I have a West Indian background. I don't know if the American viewers will catch it. It was brilliant for him because he was the only one who laid down an action pose.

What about Kerryn? She was taken on the go see and she won the immunity.

That was good, Kerryn. She's got a sexiness about here.

What about her and Colin? She was trying to get him out of his shell.

They would make a good couple. But it's hard to be in a relationship and try to succeed in this business. At the beginning of the season I tell them all don't mess with that because it's a distraction.

Has it ever worked out for you with a model?

It's worked for me, but I was already where I needed to be in my career.

What about Laury? She was upset that she didn't win the photo assignment.

She was trippin. Did she not see her picture? It was not that good for her to lash out. I was embarrassed for her. She should have known better.

What about Mountaha?

She's a sweetheart. She gets it, but it's gotta get her. She's coming along.

Salome kept bringing up the fact that she wasn't familiar with sports. What did you think of that?

That's a bullsh*t excuse. If you get hired by a client, are you gonna say you don't know what sports is? She doesn't know what sports is, but she damn sure knows what fashion is. Fashion is the key to everything. It's the key to sports, music, everything. Everything you do incorporates fashion, whether you're sitting at a desk or flying a plane. Everyone has a uniform while you're doing something like that. If you're a professional motercycle rider or a race car driver then you wear a suit for that. Fashion relates to everything. I don't understand how if you're into fashion you don't know what sports is.

What about Sandhurst?

Sandhurst is cool. When you're classically trained like that it's hard to break that mold. It's hard to come up with a different swag. He'll blow it for himself if doesn't come with something different. The pose at the end was cool, it caught you off guard, but it wasn't sports related.

What about Shawn?

Like Shawn, these kids have a misinterpretation of what fashion is. There are those who put too much in and those who don't put enough. It doesn't matter if you're good looking. It's that happy medium you have to find.

She's good, she just looks very thin.

What about Gabriel? Something was going on between him and Amanda.

I was saying, "Amanda, don't mess with this boy." She's getting too caught up with Gabe and his penis.

What about Colin?

It's like trying to get Einstein to become... Tyson. He's a good looking guy, he's just a nerd. If they were remaking Revenge of the Nerds he would be starring in it.

What about CJ? We saw a different side of her this week.

She had fun. I saw that side of her though, she's into motorcycles and she knows people I know in LA. I wanted her to show the world that side of her. Once people really see who she is they'll look at her and see that this girl is really beautiful and see that she really has something. Some of the cast didn't like her and I know what that's like. I've been on jobs where other guys didn't like me because I was a client's favorite. I feel for her.

She got along with Jonathan and Branden though.

Jonathan is older and he's a little more mature. He can relate. With Branden, you watch him grow every week. The kid will grow on you. The first week when he said something about homosexuals and Latinos, I was ready to send him home after that. I thought he was in the wrong business. The business of fashion is all about getting along. One thing about about people in fashion is we get along. Then I thought, let's keep him and let's educate him and turn him into someone who is respectful of everyone. You'll see him mature.

Amanda won the photo assigment and went to the go see.

Going into that casting I think she should have been able to talk with Nicole. They need to stay focused on what they're getting ready to do. They're so excited about their win and talking about how great they are and then the client brings them back to reality.

Karen was eliminated. What did you think of her?

I didn't know what she was doing. When I saw her eyes I knew she was going home. She was not made to be modeling, I'm so sorry to say.. There are tons of beautiful African American women out there with eyes that don't do that. She turned on that x-ray vision.
