Backpacks Are Back: 10 Chic Ways to Replace Your Purse

Upgrade your bag collection with these trendy backpacks.

By Liz Kennedy

I used to be one of those women who would carry a purse, but then always need some sort of extra bag (tote, plastic bag, etc.) to carry everything else that didn’t fit in my purse. I’d show up to work with no less than three bags in tow, looking like an actual bag lady. So now that backpacks are back in style, I’m officially declaring myself on team backpack. And I’m not going back.

Backpacks pack a punch with how much they can carry: laptops, shoes, water bottles, books, etc. Plus, they usually have secret compartments for smaller items like my phone, keys, and headphones. But the best part about backpacks? I don’t have the shoulder pain I used to when trying to juggle three bags at once. So if you’re feeling like you want to join team backpack, too, check out the chic picks below.

Matt and Nat Mini Fabi Faux Leather Backpack

Made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, this eco-friendly backpack is a mini version of Matt and Nat’s popular Fabi backpack. It’s got a zippered interior pocket for your smartphone and vertical zip gussets that allow you expand the main opening to easily find things inside. Plus, with its super chic look, it’s a perfect day or night bag.

Vince Camuto Small Luk Adjustable Leather Backpack

This modern leather piece is a true showstopper. While the hardware is eye-catching, it’s really the three-way adjustable straps that make this bag so lust-worthy. Wear it as a traditional backpack for your everyday commute, zip the straps together and carry as a sling bag for something a little different, or remove the straps and carry from the rolled top handle for a night out.

Lululemon City Adventurer Convertible Backpack

From work to workout, this jack-of-all-trades bag has pockets for everything: your laptop, water bottle, phone, sweaty gear, and more. Plus, the material is water-repellent, durable, and easy to wipe clean — aka a winning combo for a backpack that’ll get you through your long days.

Rebecca Minkoff Julian Nylon Backpack

If you’re looking for a sporty but chic backpack, this is it. Though it’s lightweight, this pack carries a heavy style punch with its camo print, clip-lock detail, and dangling zip tassels.
