Thanks to hygge, mid-century modern, and other recent home-decor trends, our spaces have become neutral, muted, and sterile institutions. Guys! Where has all the fun of living gone?
There is maybe only three months per year where we seem capable of letting go of our penchant for all things boring. That time is summer.
Think about it. We’re more relaxed when it’s warm out. We lean more towards color and patterns when the days are longer. We allow ourselves to have more fun. For three short months, the world seems limitless. Now, wouldn’t it be great if every day could feel like that? Maybe we wouldn’t look so longingly toward summer or feel so depressed as it ends if we were able to sprinkle some of the lightness and fun throughout the year.
Let's start by surrounding ourselves with those summer vibes at home. I’m not talking about anything as obvious as pineapple cups, watermelon napkins, or tiki torches. If you look a little deeper, there are plenty of outdoor details that would work just fine indoors. Here are a few ideas to kick you off.
Cactus with Wall Frame
Cacti are not necessarily summer-specific but they do connote warmer weather. They are also around all year in some parts of the world so it's not as desperate as putting a picture of seashells on the wall!
Xena Taler Striped Coaster Set
Nautical stripes can be fun any time of year — especially when they are on cocktail costers.
Juniper Faux Fur Throw Blanket
Ocean colors, mountain textures. Genius!
Bright Ceramicist Vases
Add some color in your life! It won't hurt, promise.
Chilewich Engineered Squares Placemats
Great for the patio outside, equally gorgeous on the dining table inside. Made from phthalate-free, renewable vegetable compounds, these mats add a playful texture while being super easy to wipe-off and clean.
When the outside hours start running short, bring the sun inside!
Grid Table Lamp
Keep an airy feel about the room by avoing big, solid pieces of furniture. This light is essentially an outdoor piece made for the great indoors.
I'm on a boat! With this wallpaper, it feels like just that.
Manor Classic Candle – English Summer
To be fully convincing, you need to heighten all the senses. Is there anything more pleasant than the scent of an English summer garden?
Sheer Crosshatch Curtain
Easy, breezy, beautiful. Perfect for a room where you don't need too much sun coverage.
Slipstream Ceiling Fan
What a gorgeous way to be reminded of warmer, lazy days. Ceiling fans are also great for keeping the air fresh year-round.
Mercado Storage Baskets
Hide your periodicals, throws, extra pillows, and knick knacks in containers fit for a beach house. Each of these hand-braided palm baskets takes three days to make.
