An engaged couple from Missouri claims that a restaurant canceled their rehearsal dinner after discovering they are gay.
Mindy Rackley shared a Facebook post detailing how she and her fiancée, Kendall Brown, were going to hold their wedding rehearsal dinner at Madison's Café, a restaurant in O’Fallon, Missouri, reports the Kansas City Star.
After making plans, the owner’s wife called to ask the name of the groom. Upon learning the “groom” was a woman, however, Rackley claimed the owners said they would have to "defer" the couple to another restaurant since "they don't condone that kind of relationship.”
“Most of you know my girlfriend and I are getting married soon. My soon to be mother in law called Madison Café to make reservations for our rehearsal dinner June 3rd. June 4th the wife of the owner of the restaurant called Kendall. This is their conversation: (I meaning Kendall) ‘I received a phone call from the owner’s wife the next day. When I answered she said she had some questions about the dinner. One of the questions was ‘What is your groom’s name to which I kindly responded, It’s actually a woman and her name is Mindy.’ She said, ‘Your spouse is a WOMAN?’ She immediately proceeded to tell me that she is sorry she will have to defer me to someone else for our dinner because they don’t condone that kind of relationship. She told me that out of ‘love’ for me she has to decline our business because they believe I am in an unhealthy relationship. I immediately hung up.”
“We have never been treated this way and have never been declined a service because [of] who we are. Our hearts hurt. I understand everyone has a right to their opinion and beliefs. How the whole thing was handled was very unprofessional. The owner intentionally called her to find out this information and then to tell us her opinion. This post is seriously to just spread the word about this restaurant so that nobody needs to feel the way that we do now. This is not the world we are fighting for any more. We are all fighting for a world where we are seen as human. Let love win this time!!!!”
Many commenters sent love to the couple, with one writing, "I’m so sorry that you had to deal with that sort of small-minded ignorance. I wish both of you a lifetime of happiness!"
"Discrimination big time is EXACTLY what it is!!! I stand behind you 100 percent," said another.
Another helpful follower wrote, "These hateful and scared people are the minority. Much love and happiness to you and your family!! If you need any referrals for vendors we were lucky enough to work with, please feel free to DM."
No word yet on if the couple has found a new venue.
