David and Victoria Beckham have been married for almost 20 years, which is about a billion years in celebrity-marriage terms. Though reportedly very much committed to staying together, the couple still leaves space in their relationship to lead separate lives. And, the built-in breathing room seems to serve the marriage just fine.
According to a source who chatted with Us Weekly: "They will always be family. But David and Victoria are leading very different lives.” The source added that Victoria wants to move back to England and continue to work on her fashion label, while David would prefer to "do his own thing" and enjoy his retirement.
Still, the couple doesn't have to occupy separate homes to get some alone time. Us Weekly farther reports that the Beckhams' country home in Oxfordshire, England, has separate "his and hers" wings. "I think they quite like having somewhat separate lives. When you’ve been married that long, some regular distance does you both good," the source said.
The Beckhams aren't the only longstanding celebrity twosome who take some time apart. Sarah Jessica Parker — who's been married to Matthew Broderick for 20 years — has also been open about the benefits of time spent apart.
"I know this sounds nuts, but we have lives that allow us to be away and come back together,” Parker once told Us Weekly. “His work life takes him here, and mine takes me there. In some ways, I think that that’s been enormously beneficial because we have so much to share in a way."
Now, how do we get the budget for a "his and hers" wing in our place?
