Captain Sandy Yawn Weighs in on the Below Deck Sailing Yacht Crash

The Below Deck Mediterranean captain also shared some words of advice for crew members going through difficult charter seasons.

The cast of Below Deck Sailing Yacht was understandably shaken up when the Parsifal III experienced not one but two collisions with a dock during their charter season in both the May 10 and May 17 episodes.

How to Watch

In an interview with Bravo Insider, Captain Glenn Shephard explained how rare the situation was: “I’ve parked the boat, I don’t know how many times, probably over 100 times, and in more challenging situations. On this one, a couple things went wrong. That’s never happened before.” He even described the event as “kind of a low point” in his career.

But despite how unusual the crash may have been, Captain Glenn is certainly not the only one who has had an experience like this. Below Deck Mediterranean’s Captain Sandy Yawn weighed in on the situation in an interview with The Daily Dish, and totally understood how Captain Glenn and the rest of the crew must have felt.

“I think when you watch something, you connect with the person who has your same position, so I always connect with the captains,” said Captain Sandy. “With Captain Glenn, when I saw him hitting the dock, I just thought, man that could kill his entire charter season because that part opens that garage.”

It’s not the only time Captain Sandy has sympathized with a fellow Below Deck captain. “With Captain Lee [Rosbach], when [Ashton Pienaar] fell in the water [in Below Deck Season 6], I know exactly how he felt, because I had a similar thing happen to me years ago,” she said. “I knew exactly how he felt.”

Following the collision in the May 17 episode of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, viewers saw Captain Glenn head down to his cabin to take a moment to compose himself, and it sounds as though Captain Sandy would have handled it exactly the same way.

“You just gotta pull it together. Some people are really great at pulling their emotions together, and some people just wear it on their sleeve. I guarantee you, the people who blow up, they look back and think, 'Man, why didn’t I just maintain?' And that’s a skill. That’s when you talk yourself off a ledge. Just breathe and pause and take that minute,” she said.
