Bevy Smith is opening up her difficult experience with coronavirus, sharing that she contracted COVID-19 in the earlier days of the pandemic. The Fashion Queens alum also revealed that her father recently passed away from the virus.
Bevy shared the sad news on Twitter on July 17, also sending a reminder to her followers to take care of themselves and prioritize their mental health during these trying times.
“When the pandemic hit, I said ‘you’ve got to get back in therapy’, then I contracted covid, my Dad died from it & well, I could name more trauma but you get the gist, it ain’t been easy, but not just for me, for NONE OF US! Please seek HELP, we all need some MENTAL HEATHCARE!” she wrote.
The radio host went on to specify that she was sharing her experience in order to encourage others to seek if they feel like they’re struggling with their mental health.
“You’re seeing folks seemingly “pop up” with issues, @IyanlaVanzant came on #BEVELATIONS in April & said most of us have always had these issues it’s just that now the pandemic has amplified them!” she wrote in a second tweet, also adding, “We have less distractions, it’s a great time to do some self awareness work!”
In addition to advocating for mental healthcare, Bevy also recently spoke out against systemic racism in entertainment while appearing on the July 6 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen: @ Home.
“I know on several pop culture shows I’ve been a part of, I’ve had to advocate strongly that they hire Black people as producers, because we were covering stories where the majority of them were centered around Black celebrities,” she said. “And it really does matter about who tells your story. Representation matters.”
