Though it's hard to argue with the top-shelf fashion at the Met Gala, not all of its celebrity guests are totally charmed with the annual event. Demi Lovato, as it happens, is one of those guests. The singer recently opened up on her experience at the 2016 gala, and let's just say ... it wasn't easy for the star, who's worked hard to fight substance abuse.
"I had a terrible experience [at the gala]," the singer told Billboard. "This one celebrity was a complete bitch and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink."
Wisely, Lovato took swift action before she relapsed into old habits. After texting her manager, she quickly headed to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at 10 p.m. "I changed my clothes, but I still had my diamonds on — millions of dollars of diamonds on in an AA meeting," Lovato said.
And, though she wasn't dressed like the average meeting attendee, the pop star added: "I related more to the homeless people in that meeting who struggled with the same struggles that I deal with than the people at the Met Gala — fake and sucking the fashion industry’s dick."
Though Lovato declined to name which celebrity sent her reeling that night, the Internet has a theory on this one. At the 2016 gala, Lovato posed on the red carpet with Nicki Minaj, whose dress had also been designed by Jeremy Scott. Photos that surfaced from the evening appeared to show Minaj giving Lovato some major side-eye.
Later, Minaj shared photos from the night and tagged Scott, but not Lovato. And, Lovato reposted the photo that showed Minaj giving her that look, and noted: "This picture pretty much summed up my first and probably last Met."
