Donny Deutsch currently stars in the USA Network comedy Donny!, but he could have also have been in another hit TV show these days. Shark Tank creator Mark Burnett offered Donny a seat on the reality show before it premiered in 2009, but he turned it down.
Now that the ABC series, which features entrepreneurs pitching their products and services to a panel of wealthy investors, is a bona fide hit, does Donny regret his decision? For Donny, it wasn't an investment that felt right for him to make at the time. "I just finished my show The Big Idea, and I felt it was too in the same space. I'd be kind of entrepreneur boy for the rest of my life, and I don't see myself as a Shark. I see myself as more of a motivator-type guy," said Donny on Monday night's episode of Watch What Happens Live. "So no, I don't regret it. It's a great show, but I wouldn't be happy doing that right now."
Though Donny had hosted the entrepreneur-focused CNBC talk show The Big Idea for several years, he didn't feel like the way he approached business would mesh well with Shark Tank. "My attitude in business always has been not Shark-like. It's more prop up," Donny explained. "It just didn't feel right for me."
These days, Donny is bringing that positive attitude to his new USA comedy Donny! where he stars as a fictionalized version of himself based on his experiences as an ad-man, TV personality, and single dad. You can catch a new episode of Donny! Tuesday at 10:30/9:30c on USA Network.
