The fiancé of Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery died from a rare form of cancer Sunday, PEOPLE has confirmed. He was 34.
Michelle, who plays widow Lady Mary Crawley in the British period drama, released a statement through her publicist saying, "The family is very grateful for the support and kindness they have received but would kindly request that they are left to grieve in private."
Michelle's fiancé John Dineen had been working as a senior director at FTI Consulting but returned home to Cork, Ireland to receive treatment at Marymount Hospice after he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer earlier this year, according to the Irish Independent. Michelle was reportedly with John and his family during his final moments on Sunday.
Michelle has kept many of the details of their relationship private since the couple started dating in September 2013. "I have a wonderful man in my life from Ireland. We were introduced by Allen Leech. That's all you need to know," Michelle said in 2014, according to The Telegraph.
For his part, Michelle's Downton co-star Allen, who plays Tom Branson on the show, was proud of the couple he helped put together. "John's like family to me and I knew he'd really get on with Michelle," he has said of his matchmaker role, according to The Telegraph. "She's a great girl - probably as far from Lady Mary as you could imagine."
Michelle, whose birthday is Tuesday, and John were said to have gotten engaged in February 2015. The Irish Independent reports that a funeral for John will be held Wednesday.
Michelle was recently seen in the United States on Thursday night's episode of Watch What Happens Live with Allen to promote the upcoming final season of Downton Abbey. See what happened during their visit in the photos, below.
