Family Karma's Amrit Kapai Is Engaged to Nicholas Kouchoukos: "I Can't Do Life Without You"
The Family Karmacast member surprised his longtime boyfriend with a gorgeous proposal in the latest episode.
Amrit Kapai and boyfriend Nicholas Kouchoukos are officially ready for their next chapter. The Family Karma couple got engaged in the July 14 episode of the show.
After sharing his intention to propose to his boyfriend of nine years with his family and friends earlier this season of Family Karma, Amrit popped the question to his longtime love during a day out on a boat surrounded by friends Bali Chainani, Vishal Parvani, and Richa Sadana.
As Amrit got ready to propose to Nicholas during the romantic outing, which was organized by Bali, he admitted in an interview during the episode, "I am kind of nervous," before joking, "Not as nervous as Vishal. I don't think he slept very much last night."
The big moment finally arrived while Amrit and Nicholas were taking some lovely photos on the water. "So I don't tell you nearly enough that I love you. You're everything I need, and I've known for a while now that I can't do life without you. You're a good person, and you're gonna be such a good father," Amrit told Nicholas. "Remember when we first started dating, you told me you needed to protect your heart, and I said you don't have to worry about that because I'm gonna protect it. I made that promise to you. Well, I want to renew that promise for the rest of my life, to protect your heart."
Amrit got down on one knee. "Nicholas, will you marry me?" he said, to which an emotional Nicholas said yes!
Amrit then handed Nicholas a ring so that he could also propose to him. "Amrit, I knew the moment I met you that I wanted to spend my life with you. I love you the most," Nicholas said after getting down on one knee. "Will you marry me?"
Naturally, Amrit said "of course." Both he and Nicholas put the rings on each other's fingers and shared a passionate kiss.
Amrit's friends were overflowing with joy after the engagement, toasting to the happy couple's future with champagne. "I was one of the people that he initially came out to. I was happy for him then; I'm even more happy for him now, because I've seen the journey he's been on," Bali gushed in an interview during the episode. "Literally just have chills all over my body."
Vishal also added in an interview during the episode that he was "so, so happy" for his best friend.
Amrit's proposal came just in the nick of time. Earlier in the episode, Nicholas met with Amrit's mother, Lavina, to dicuss their future, specifically asking her if she thinks her son will ever propose. Of course, Amrit had already told his mom that he was going to ask Nicholas to marry him, so she had to continue to keep the secret and act like she didn't know what her son's intentions were. "These lips are sealed. It'll never, ever leave my mouth," Lavina said in an interview during the episode. "I'm not going to break. I'm not going to blow it."
Amrit and Nicholas have shared their journeys of coming out and finding acceptance with their loved ones since Season 1 of Family Karma. One of the most powerful moments came earlier this season when Amrit opened up about his sexuality and shared his intention to marry Nicholas to his grandmother, Koshlya, whom he lovingly refers to as Nani.
At the time of their conversation, Nani was still processing everything, but she showed love to Amrit and Nicholas and gave her blessing for their marriage. She continued to show her support for their union while meeting up with both Amrit and Nicholas, as well as Lavina, in a subsequent episode.
Amrit later opened up about his current relationship with his grandmother during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in June. "You know, it's always gonna be baby steps. It's always gonna be baby steps," Amrit explained. "You know, I always tell people, for me, it took me, what, 25 years of my life to come to terms with who I am and my sexuality, so I can't expect my mom, my dad, my grandmother, I can't expect them to do it overnight. It's gonna take them a long time as well, and that's OK."
During an interview with The Daily Dish podcast last month prior to the episode featuring his proposal airing, Amrit shared that he wasn't sure how Nicholas' parents would react if they were to get engaged. "I mean, we have to see, like, how his parents are. That’s a little scary, like, how much they’re gonna embrace it, how supportive they’re gonna be. ‘Cause a proposal kind of solidifies a relationship. That’s sort of the first indication of like, OK, this is gonna be a forever thing," he said. "So just how, maybe the thing that terrifies me, the effect it’s gonna have on, like, the people that we’re close to."
But of course, Amrit also said "there are a ton of things that excite me about spending the rest of my life with Nicholas." "I think just the fact that we’re moving forward and that we want to move forward. The last thing you want to do is get sort of stagnant in a relationship, and you’re not progressing," Amrit continued. "Everyone has, like, this life that they’ve envisioned and this life that they’ve dreamed of, and you gotta constantly be moving forward in that direction. And, you know, if there is a proposal down the road, I know that’s gonna be the right step in that direction."
