Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright Are Finally Ready to Take This Step as a Married Couple
"I never dated anybody that was my best friend," Jax says of his Vanderpump Rules wife.
The Cauchis, Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright, are inching closer and closer to their one-year wedding anniversary. And in the time before they said "I do," Vanderpump Rules viewers witnessed the couple, who first met in Las Vegas (naturally), experience nearly five years of adorable ups (everything wedding-related this season and their proposal a couple seasons back) and, like all couples, some downs — a cheating scandal, the loss of his father — proving these two can weather any storm. It's pretty clear that Jax and Brittany are stronger than ever because of it all.
And you can bet that Jax has stepped away from all that a changed man. "The most important thing I’ve learned about relationships is being honest, being faithful, listening — I have a hard time with that — paying attention, patience. All that, I really have a hard time with, so I’m working on that," he shared with The Daily Dish in a recent interview, which you can check out in the video, above.
He added, "Being married means… You know, everyone else is going to say, 'You’re first year is always your hardest,' and this and that. It’s actually not. Being married is awesome. It’s the same thing as dating to me. I think the only thing that’s changed in my life is I’m responsible for somebody now. You know, it’s my wife. That’s the only thing that’s changed. It’s been a great year so far. We’ve been married since June, right? It’s been amazing. We’ve had no hiccups, and everyone said, 'The first year is going to be hard.' Especially being on TV, your relationship is magnified, but it really hasn’t. Brittany is my best friend."
Do you remember who your first valentine was?
Jax Taylor: Oh my gosh, there’s been so many…
I remember my first Valentine’s [Day] present. It was going to Tiffany’s and getting those kidney bean earrings for my girlfriend when she was in high school. I think every guy did that. They bought their girlfriend the Tiffany’s jewelry. That was my first expensive Valentine’s [Day] gift. She was actually a friend of my sister’s. Yeah, I don’t think her parents liked me too well. I was one of those… not sure what I wanted to do. Her parents didn’t really — I mean, they liked me as a person, but I just don’t think they liked where I was headed.

JT: Brittany and I are huge, huge snackers. That’s one of the things that brought Brittany and I together. We just love to snack. I mean, if you go to our pantry, I have all the cereals, all the chocolates, all the chips, all the cookies. It’s not healthy, but we just love to snack.
This is my first Valentine’s [Day] married. We are going to go on our honeymoon. We haven’t done that yet, so our honeymoon is going to take place right around Valentine’s Day. We’re going to go to Jamaica. So, I think it’ll be a little different, but Valentine’s Day is a Hallmark holiday. I mean, if you ask any guy that — first of all, every day in Brittany’s life is a freakin’ Valentine’s.
I think Valentine’s is more for like, if you’re dating… That’s terrible, Brittany would probably slap me for saying this. But, you know, I guess if you just did a normal thing — you get flowers. You’re basically keeping all the cards and flowers places in business. It’s one of those days. They just made a day for that.
Valentine’s Day at SUR is bananas! They put the balloons, they do a set menu. Yeah, Valentine’s Day at SUR Restaurant is chaotic.
The best Valentine’s Day you’ve ever had?
JT: As long as I was going home with somebody that night, it was good to me, honestly. Although, I did have some ones that I was single [for] and you would go to the bars and you’d usually find women that were depressed that they had nobody.
I don’t think I ever had a worst Valentine’s Day. That’s terrible to say. But if I was single, like I just said, I would just go to a bar and it would be good. I mean, I’m trying not to be dirty here, but I’ve never really had a bad Valentine’s Day.
When was the moment you knew you were in love with Brittany?
JT: When she opened her mouth. When she started talking. Her southern accent really got me. I was on a date with another girl when I met Brittany and I was in Vegas. I was going through… just being Jax, sleeping with everything that moved. I was sitting down and Brittany walked by. I heard her talk to Katie and Scheana. And they were like, “Stay away from it, Jax.” But then, she started talking — and then the fact that she ordered Hooters pretty much sold it.
The fact that I could be myself around her and she’s goofy, she’s funny. She can go out and be in a barn and shovel horse s--t. And then, she can go and dress like she’s going to the Golden Globes and look beautiful. She can get dirty, she can be funny, she can be goofy, she can laugh. We can just be fun around each other. Like I said, she’s my best friend.
I never dated anybody that was my best friend. I dated people because I wanted to sleep with them. That’s it. I’m like, “Well, I guess we’ve been sleeping together for a couple of weeks, we probably should be dating.” And that’s why I always cheated on every girlfriend I was with, because I never had anything in common. I just assumed that we should date since we’ve been sleeping together. So, that’s what’s changed my mind on a whole lot of things. Just the fact that we’re so close — and I don’t think I’ve ever been close with any of my girlfriends in my whole life like that.
What would you say she thinks she loves most about you?
I make her laugh. I make her laugh every day. She’ll say that. She’ll say, “He makes me laugh.”
I mean, I hope it’s my charm… No! I don’t know what it was because, gosh in the beginning, it wasn’t easy for me to date her because of everybody telling her not to date me. You know, like, “He’s Jax. He sleeps with everybody. He’s a player, yada yada.” I think the fact that I make her laugh, I think the fact that she never watched the show, she didn’t know who I was. I think that kind of was part of it.
We like the same things, we talk about the same things. The only thing we disagree about is music. Other than that, everything is the same. And that’s just because I’m old and I like ‘80s music, and she likes everybody that starts with “Lil.”
