Jimmy Kimmel and Mariah Carey Weigh In on Fergie's Infamous National Anthem Performance
Here's the real reason Kimmel was smiling, as well as Carey's advice for her fellow crooner.
Everyone misses the mark — or, um, a musical note — now and again. So it's only human that Fergie had a performance that, perhaps, wasn't quite her finest when she belted out the National Anthem at the NBA All-Star Game. Human, too, were the reactions of those around her.
Jimmy Kimmel was among the audience members at the celebrity-studded game in Los Angeles, and the talk-show host seemed to have a hard time suppressing a laugh. So, what was really going on as he listened to Fergie croon about the "twilight's last gleaming?" Let's hear it from the man himself.
Addressing his Jimmy Kimmel Live audience about the musical snafu, Kimmel said: "I just wanna say the reason I was smiling … is because I love the National Anthem so much." He added, jokingly: "In hindsight, trying to work in the words ‘my humps, my humps, my lovely lady lumps’ may have been a mistake."
And in response to Fergie's statement on her rendition of the song, in which she called herself "a risk taker," Kimmel had this to say: "Here’s the thing about taking risks,” Kimmel said, “when it comes to the National Anthem, don’t. Just don’t."
Mariah Carey also weighed in on the pitchy courtside spectacle. When TMZ asked the singer how Fergie should deal with all the negative feedback, Carey had a reassuring tip. "Darling, nobody needs to listen to that," she said.
