Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker Reveal ALL About What It's Been Like to Team Up on Kandi & The Gang
The Kandi & The Gang couple and business owners dish on what it's been like to go on this journey together.
When it came time to take fans inside Kandi Burruss' world at the Old Lady Gang restaurant on the Bravo series Kandi & The Gang, it meant that fans would not only get an inside look at the Atlanta hotspot but also get to know Kandi's family and employees like never before.
"Well, I mean, I think it's kind of cool because my family has supported me for years, just through me being on the show or whatever," Kandi shared in an interview with The Daily Dish. "And so I think, finally, it's their time to kind of shine or whatever. I like that because now, multiple things: They get to have a platform where they get to work on all their dreams and give them their purpose or whatever. And then on top of that, now they get to see what I have been dealing with [laughs]."
The chance to film with her family also meant that Kandi was able to find more balance in keeping her relationships with those close to her front and center. "So it's twofold, you know what I mean?" she said. "For me, it's kind of tough because I'm one of those people that comes from a big family. And they're involved with each other. So they feel like they need their attention, too. My cousins, my mama, my aunties. They get mad if I don't call them enough. So it's kind of like, 'OK, now that you get to be in the spotlight, now let's see how that works out [laughs].'"
While Bravo fans have gotten to know Kandi pretty well over the years thanks to her sharing her life on The Real Housewives of Atlanta as well as several spinoff series that have highlighted her professional and personal endeavors, she thinks Kandi & The Gang gives them yet another look at who she is.
"Well, I think one thing that people get to know about me is that I can be a little too soft on people that work with me. I think people [are] like, 'Oh, Kandi's a businesswoman, she's this, she's that.' Which, I am a businesswoman, but I feel like sometimes I'm very compassionate. I have a lot of compassion for the people that work for me," she said. "I can give too many chances. Whereas Todd is no-nonsense."
Life and business partner, Todd Tucker, who also sat down with The Daily Dish to chat about the series, shared his take on that POV.
"Well, I think that's why we work well together. And I think when you look at the restaurant industry, my background is TV production, it's so different. And I just thought, if I can manage a production, I can manage the restaurant people. And I'm like, no, it's, it's a totally different crowd," he said. "It's a different audience. But, yeah, I think we balance each other out. She's a little soft, I'm a little more stern. And even the kids say it."
And while there are many superstars working at OLG, of course, at the center of the dynamic staff are the OLGs themselves: Kandi's aunts, Bertha Jones and Nora Wilcox, as well as Joyce Jones, who also happens to be Kandi's mom and is also known to RHOA fans as Mama Joyce.
"Oh, they are just being themselves," Kandi said. "You know what I mean? My Aunt Nora is 82. And my Aunt Bertha is 80. So my mom is 72. And I just feel like they're just at that age where they feel like they should be able to do and say whatever they want to say. And they don't really care what anybody feels about it."
Kandi then shared some insight into what it was like growing up around them. "I guess it's just a mixture of all of them. I know my Aunt Bertha used to teach me a lot of cooking tips growing up. My Aunt Nora, she's very chill, a sweetheart. But she's a firecracker, too. You know what I mean? Depending on what day you catch her," Kandi shared. "I think I definitely am a mixture of all of them. 'Cause all of them are similar. They all are outspoken and kind of can be a little verbally abrasive at times [laughs]. Very honest. I feel like I got it from them, for sure."
