Southern Charm Executive Producer Calls This the "Perfect Kathryn Moment"
"It's quintessential Kathryn," showrunner Jessica Chesler said of this Kathryn Dennis moment.
Kathryn Dennis has given us so many unforgettable moments over the course of six seasons of Southern Charm so far, but there's one that really captured her true essence, according to one of the show's producers.
Did you catch Kathryn vaping during one of her interviews earlier this season? Well, that was really Kathryn at her most authentic self, according to Southern Charm executive producer and showrunner Jessica Chesler. “When I saw it, yes, it was one of those moments that we were like, this is amazing. Our cast is so authentically themselves they can’t help it, Kathryn especially. When she does something like that, it just sort of perfectly encapsulates who she is sometimes so we all thought it was great," she recently told Decider. “It was a perfect Kathryn moment. It’s perfectly Kathryn and we try to always find those moments.”
Chesler explained that they provide the Southern Charm cast members with "whatever they need to feel comfortable," and because Kathryn smokes, it's not unusual for her to occasionally "reach over and take a drag." "Sometimes she’s talking when she’s doing it, and sometimes she’s not," Chesler said, adding that Kathryn is using vaping to try to quit smoking.
She also said that the producers loved both the visual and substance of that moment with Kathryn, but noted that they “don’t want to glamorize it because that wasn’t the intention. It was more just like, this is who Kathryn is." Chesler added, “We always try to find authentic moments from them and it’s quintessential Kathryn.”
Patricia Altschul recently spilled some more behind-the-scenes tea about how son Whitney Sudler-Smith originally convinced her to be on Southern Charm when The Daily Dish caught up with her last month. "He did tell me at the beginning, 'Just be on it for five minutes and that's all you have to do,'" she recalled. "And now he says, 'Mother, please don't talk too much. Watch what you say. Edit what you say.' And, of course, I just say whatever pops into my head. But I think that gives him ulcers."
