Tamika Scott Reveals She Was Pressured to Have an Abortion During the Height of Xscape's Success
The singer discussed the emotional memory on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
Tamika Scott dropped an emotional bombshell during the second episode of Xscape Still Kickin' It: she said the R&B group's management team tried to pressure her into having an abortion when she got pregnant with her first child, daughter Ocean.
"They gave me an ultimatum to stay in the group or have an abortion," the singer elaborated during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen (clip above).
She said that the group was mad at her because they were at the height of their success and just about to take it over the top when she got pregnant. At one point, she recalled, the management team decided to just try and kick her out of the group, a plan that was dismantled after her sister LaTocha Scott (who considered herself the "voice of the group," as she said on Xscape Still Kickin' It) threatened to go with her.
Despite the pushback from management, Tamika managed to rise above the negativity and continue her career. "I still outdanced them," Tamika joked of her group members.
Group member Kandi Burruss thinks that the climate for girl groups and pregnancies was different in the '90s, which caused music industry executives to panic and apply pressure.
"Nowadays," Kandi said, "people have 'baby bump alert' and everybody's excited, but they weren't like that in the '90s."
