Tom Colicchio's Brush With 'SATC' Fame
How he almost dined with Carrie and crew.
Um, Tom Colicchio, they don’t actually mean it when they say, “Break a leg.”
“I was supposed to do a cameo in a movie, and I completely screwed up my leg the day before shooting and couldn’t do it. Actually, it was the pilot for Sex and the City!” the Top Chef judge tells The Hollywood Reporter about his missed connection with Manhattan’s Fab Four. “It was shot in my restaurant when I had Gramercy Tavern, and they wanted me by the grill. Two things happened: I screwed up my leg, so I was on crutches, and we had a fire in the restaurant the night before, so we couldn’t light the grill.”
Luckily, these hiccups didn’t make it a wrap on Tom’s scripted TV career. In addition to lending his culinary expertise on Top Chef: Seattle, Tom’s been swinging by the set of HBO’s Treme. “[Series creator David Simon] told me, ‘We’re going to want you to go down there with a few other chefs. You’re going to give [chef character Janette Desautel] your business card and become her rabbi, sort of, when she comes to New York,’” says the Think Like a Chef author. “I can’t deliver lines, but I can talk about food all night long.”
