Vanderpump Rules Cast Reacts to Shay's Substance Abuse

We saw a more vulnerable side of Scheana Shay on this week's Vanderpump Rules, when the SURver/engagement ring advisor revealed to Ariana Madix and Lisa Vanderpump that her husband Mike Shay had been self-medicating with drugs and alcohol. Scheana explained that she was surprised to learn about it for herself, and feels it's creating a bigger rift in their marriage. It's news her Vanderpump Rules co-stars were taken aback by as well. “I was completely caught off-guard,” Tom Sandoval told Wetpaint when asked about Shay's recent struggles. “We all party. I mean, we’re not party animals, but we all like to have a good time. He never showed any signs of being out of control that we saw,” Tom Schwartz explained. 

Scheana Opens up About Shay to Ariana

Sandoval also noted that Shay's struggles were rooted in something deeper. “Some of his issues came from depression. I really tried to kinda help pull him out of that and he has pulled himself out of that as well," Sandoval said, adding that many of Shay's friends and family live over an hour from L.A. "He maybe felt alone and I felt really bad about that. But as soon as I found out about it I did everything I could to try and help him out.”

"It's a work in progress," Jax Taylor said. "It's one of those things where it takes time." Scheana was active on Twitter Monday night, responding to fans and revealing that six months since filming those difficult moments, Shay is doing well, and their relationship is in "the best" place today.
