Actress Rose McGowan has been in the spotlight as a vocal proponent of women's rights and was one of the first to come forward alleging harrowing experiences of sexual abuse at the hands of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. Now, McGowan will share more candid details about her life in a forthcoming memoir to be published by Harper Collins. Did you know, for example, that the actress was raised in a cult? 

Brave, McGowan's aptly-titled book, will hit shelves on January 30, 2018. In the memoir, the actress shares memories from going up in Italy as a member of Children of God. McGowan has previously spoken to People about coming of age as a member of the religious group.

"I did not want to be like those women [in the cult]," McGowan told the magazine. "[They] were basically there to serve the men sexually." And, when the group began advocating sexual relationships between children and adults, "my dad was strong enough to realize that this hippie love had gone south,” the actress said. It was then that she and her family fled, escaping through a cornfield at night and moving to the United States. 

But once she started working in Hollywood, McGowan felt that she'd landed in a cult of a different kind. "My life, as you will read, has taken me from one cult to another," the actress said in a statement. Harper Collins describes the book as equal parts memoir and manifesto.
