Supermodels: they're gorgeous, business-savvy...and sometimes a little bit mean. Sparring isn't pretty, even when its participants are. But still, we can't peel our eyes away from these fascinating feuds. Don't be mad at us, Naomi!
1. Tyra Banks vs. Naomi Campbell
There's quite a history, here, ICYMI: Tyra felt that Naomi was a relentless bully to her in the nineties, and she says that the conflict led to some of the lowest times of her life. Still, Tyra understands that the industry only added fuel to the fire. "The industry was saying: 'Look out, Naomi Campbell, here comes Tyra Banks. Sit your butt down, this younger one is coming to take your place.' And it was really unfair to her," she allowed. Still, Tyra told Swedish talk show Skavlan in October that she remains "very afraid" of Naomi to this day.
2. Tyra Banks vs. Paulina Porizkova and Janice Dickinson
Welcome back, Ms. Banks! Tyra had more super-size supermodel conflicts after she created America's Next Top Model and recruited other former cover girls to help her judge. Janice Dickinson—who was fired from the show in 2008—seemed to constantly lock horns with Tyra when she was still a judge. Janice later told US Weekly that her own substance abuse was to blame for her behavior.
But, the antagonism between Tyra and her judges didn't stop there! In 2009, Tyra issued a statement explaining that she had to fire Paulina Porizkova from the show because of budgetary reasons. But, Paulina told the Late Late Show another story “I was told by the producers that I have an ego problem,” she said.
3. Elle Macpherson vs. Heidi Klum
Elle was known in the industry as "The Body," and her team had a serious problem with Heidi trying to use the name. In 2006, Heidi told CBS News: "it's a big honor having a bra named after my nickname that people know in the business, 'The Body.'" Stop the record.
"We saw that and were like, 'Oh my god!' We were initially flabbergasted," the spokeswoman for Macpherson's Intimates line spilled to the New York Daily News The Body battle resurfaced in 2014 when Heidi started working with Bendon—a lingerie manufacturer that Elle had previously worked with for 25 years.
4. Stephanie Seymour vs. Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner
The eighties' crown it-girl told Vanity Fair that Gigi and Kendall shouldn't be called supermodels, but rather "bitches of the moment." Kendall did not take this lightly, and accused Stephanie of being a cyberbully. Stephanie sort of apologized via Instagram, saying, "At an event last week I was jokingly asked if the "era of supermodels" was over, what should we call the new great 'it' girls?? There were no names mentioned, and NO ill intent involved. A supermodel is a supermodel. I respect and admire all these women in my industry, in particular Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. Having been in the business over 20 years I know how hard these women work. Bravo to both Gigi and Kendall for their success!!" Guys, she was kidding! (Hmmm.)
5. Rebecca Romijn vs. Yolanda Hadid
A few months after Stephanie's harsh words, Rebecca gave an interview to Entertainment Tonight in which she also appeared to criticize Gigi and Kendall. "No one has proven yet that numbers of followers translates to revenue. So it is frustrating. I know a lot of people—legitimate fashion people—can’t stand it," she said. "Hate it that these, you know, social media stars are now the supermodels in fashion."
"I don't even know why she got involved. I was like, 'Oh, are we bringing our mommies in now? Should I get my mom?'" Romijn later quipped to a WWHL caller. "I thought that it was really none of her business."
