That's how the Long Islander explained it when she sat down with The Feast in Los Angeles and took a moment to describe some of her challenges adjusting to the Southern California diet. "I’m literally starving here — nobody told me that, and I landed here and I was like, 'Where’s the pizza counter?' There’s no good pizza," she complained.
But wait, let her qualify that strong sentiment: "Well, I don’t want to say that because that’s a blanket statement. But there is different pizza here, and if you accept that it’s different, then it’s good. But it’s not what I’m used to. It's not familiar."
More than just unfamiliar, Gina says, Southern California pizza restaurants have some serious format problems compared to places back home. "There’s no pizza counter," she mulled. "Always on the way from work or whatever, you get a couple slices, you bring it home, you reheat it on the oven, or you have it the next day. There’s nothing like that [in Orange County]."
So what is there in Orange County to eat? (Wait for it.)
"I feel like all they eat here is goddamn kale," Gina said. "I mean there’s kale in everything. It pops up everywhere!" [Ed. note: Gina aint lied.]
Gina also finds it's easier to avoid carbs in the land that eschews them than it is back home — because there's just not as much tempting carbohydrate to be found amid all that roughage. "I don’t think a California bagel is worth it," she said. "So, my mother in law, every time she comes, vacuum seals bagels for me and travels with them. Everything [bagels are] my favorite, so they’re like stinking up the whole plane — but she does it for me. That’s dedication. That’s love."
Right again, Gina!
And anyway, you know what they say: You can take the girl out of Long Island, but you can't take the Long Island out of the girl. Even if she is now mixing in among The Real Housewives of Orange County.
