In the Real Shelter Dog universe we’ve created, are there reunions? Are there after shows? Is there a Clubhouse and is it called the Doghouse? If any of those do exist, they would be helmed by the one and only Wacha, Andy Cohen’s furry BFF. Wacha is not only completely adorable and an Instagram star in his own right, BUT he’s also part beagle, like all the dogs we are featuring today from Midwest Beagle Rescue, Education and Welfare. (We love beagles here, what can we say? They are smart and funny and their omnipresent desire for snacks of all kinds is deeply endearing.)
Midwest Beagle Rescue, Education and Welfare shares our passion for beagles of all ages, shapes and sizes. They are a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing beagles from high-kill shelters. They have a dedicated team of foster families that care for the beags until they find their carefully matched forever homes. They only adopt dogs out within the Midwest, which might be for the best for us, or else we’d have adopted enough beagles to eat us out of house and home.
And now, gather some dog treats and meet your Real Shelter Dogs, complete with opening-credits worthy taglines!
“Life is a journey and I love going on walks.” - Archer
Archer is an eight-year-old male beagle. He is a sweet dog that has a comedic side with his grunting and groaning. His absolute favorite thing to do is go on walks. Archer is good with other dogs and is trying to figure out how to play with them and is also good with cats. Archer does have a seizure disorder, which can be scary, but improvements are being made with a natural treatment regimen.
“Everyone loves to underestimate how much I can eat, and I love to prove everyone wrong.” - Kira
Kira is a sassy, opinionated beagle that likes to share her opinion with anyone who will listen, and even those who won't. Her favorite topic is breakfast, supper, snacks, well, you get the message. She is an older gal who is mostly happy on the couch or next to you in the recliner, but, if she can be talked into it, walks perfectly on a leash. She was diagnosed with Cushing's disease, and takes one pill a day, which manages the symptoms perfectly.
“Food may be my passion, but family is forever.” - Connor
Connor is a handsome boy beagle and an excellent companion. He will not make a peep. He just looks at you with his huge beautiful eyes just asking to be loved and have some of your attention. It can be a head pat, ear scratch or just a good brushing. Connor is mostly a couch potato except when he wants a little love from his humans. A home on the quieter side will be ideal for him. Connor was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease, which is controlled with medication.
“Everybody loves a comeback, especially one staring me, a cute dog.” - Myles
Myles was seen being thrown from a truck, and made his way into rescue. He had obviously had a ruff life and been seriously mistreated. After three surgeries, he's feeling much better and enjoying life in his foster home. He loves to go for short walks, and would also enjoy being a spoiled, only fur-kid in his new home.
“This beagle doll is back on the scene, and living the dream.” - Daisy
Daisy is eight years old, approximately 30 lbs., with a happy and friendly personality. Daisy is housetrained, crate-trained, and good with dogs and cats. She is move-in ready! Daisy has cataracts, but she does fine getting around. She is also a diabetic and requires twice-a-day insulin injections.
“I’m about to give you life, so give me a forever home.” - Rodger
This is Rodger — he's three years old, 28 pounds and so handsome! He gets along well with all the other dogs he's met, and would do best in a home with another dog to be my buddy. He sleeps fine in a crate at night with his foster people close by, but when left alone in my crate he does get anxious and chews up the bedding. He also has lots of energy and loves to play.
