The AKC Has Added Two New Dog Breeds and We Bet You Can't Pronounce One

TBH, they're both actually a mouthful.

While we love rescue dogs, we still have love for purebred pups, especially those bred responsibly — and we love cooing over all the cuties at dog shows.

The American Kennel Club just announced the two newest doggos recognized this year, which bring the total recognized breeds up to 192. Check them out below — and see if you can pronounce their names!

First up is the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje (pronounced NAY’-dehr-lahn-seh KOY’-kehr-hahnd-jeh). The "Kooiker" originated hundreds of years ago in Europe — and we bet you can use the context clues to guess the region. These were traditionally duck-hunting dogs and a favorite of Dutch nobility.

Nowadays, they would make a energetic and alert companion pet that's still ready to work — and play! The spaniel-type dog will compete alongside popular breeds like the American Cocker Spaniel, the English Springer Spaniel and others in the Sporting group.

Next, meet the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen (pronounced grahnd bah-SAY’ grihf-FAHN’ vahn-DAY’-ahn). You may recognize that name from its cousin, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen (pronounced peh-TEE' bah-SAY’ grihf-FAHN’ vahn-DAY’-ahn). If you like those breeds and want to impress your friends, you're in luck. They're also known as the GBGV and PBGV for short (respectively).

The GBGV was originally bred as a rabbit hunter in France and is also related to the Basset Hound. Today, the pups have the same high-activity level, stamina and speed from their hunting days so they're best for homes with very active families. The dog will compete alongside their relatives and more in the Hound group.

(Note: These dogs will likely compete in some shows this year but they will not be eligible to compete at Westminster until 2019.)
