As animal journalists, it is our professional duty to tell you the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the U.S. As animal lovers, it is our civic duty to tell you that all breeds are created equal and encourage you to #AdoptDontShop. (Gentle reminder that even if you want a specific breed, it’s entirely likely that it is available to rescue! Just Google [breed] + rescue + zip code!)
Every year, The American Kennel Club (AKC) announces the most popular dog breeds, and every year, they’re more or less the same 10 types, give or take a rank or two. (You can see last year’s top 10 here.) The same holds true for this year’s standings — with two notable exceptions. One dog shot up the charts, and another very unexpected dog found itself at #10.
The French Bulldog — who sat comfortably at #6 last year — now finds itself at #4, perhaps bolstered by its popularity in New York City. The AKC reports the Frenchie is currently #1 in the Big Apple, with footholds in five of the city’s most densely populated neighborhoods. (The breakdown also shows that Great Danes are the most popular breed in north Manhattan neighborhood Washington Heights. We know they’re snuggly lap dogs, but seriously — how to New Yorkers fit Great Danes in their tiny apartments?!)
But perhaps even more surprisingly, last year’s #10 — the ever-lovable Boxer — has been unseated by… the German Shorthaired Pointer.
The AKC describes this unexpectedly popular pupper as enthusiastic, friendly, happy, and trainable. “They are always up for physical activities like running, swimming, organized dog sports” reads the official AKC site. “In fact, anything that will burn some of their boundless energy while spending outdoors time with a human buddy.” Even though we didn’t know too much about this breed prior, we have now definitively decided we must adopt one and buy a country house so we can spend weekends frolicking around a lake together.
Meanwhile, after a meteoric rise over the past 10 years, the Rottie is holding steady at #8, and maintaining its gentle grip on America’s hearts!
The rest of the rankings are much more expected, but lovable (and adoptable!) nonetheless. Here are America’s top 10 dog breeds from 2017:
- Labrador Retriever
- German Shepherd
- Golden Retriever
- French Bulldog
- Yorkshire Terrier
- German Shorthaired Pointer
