There’s going to be another Royal wedding! We are so excited … (and also a little surprised at how excited we are. Seriously, if you asked us about the Royals last week we would have mimed snoring The Real Housewives of Orange County’s Vicki Gunvalson style, but suddenly today we are ready to line up and buy commemorative engagement dishware.) The news of the engagement between Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle almost doesn’t get any better — oh wait it does, she’s also a dog lover!
The princess-to-be (and don’t give us that “actually, she’ll be a Duchess” nonsense, she will be a princess in our hearts) also has a fairy tale adoption story for how she decided to adopt her first pooch, Bogart, with none other than Ellen DeGeneres acting as her fairy dogmother. Meghan was at the dog shelter considering adopting a dog (a true princess knows #adoptdontshop) when Ellen and wife Portia de Rossi walked through the door. According to Meghan in Best Health, “Ellen said ‘Is that your dog?’ And I said, ‘No,’ and she’s like, ‘You have to take that dog.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’m deciding.’ And she’s like, ‘Rescue the dog!’ It’s sort of like if Oprah tells you to do something. I’m sitting there holding him and she’s like ‘Have you thought of a name for him yet?’ And I said, ‘Well, I think I’d name him Bogart,’ and she’s like ‘You’re taking the dog home.’” Ellen’s friendly dog-adopting bullying didn’t end there, when Ellen walked out of the shelter, she abruptly turned around, tapped on the glass and yelled, “Take the dog!” one last time at Meghan. What else could she do? Meghan adopted Bogart right on the spot. In addition to lab mix Bogart, Meghan has a second rescue pup, a beagle named Guy. However there’s no word if any other daytime talk show host peer pressured her into taking him home from the shelter too.
Meghan’s love of dogs extends beyond her own pack, she also has found a way to charm the Queen’s famous corgis! In their recent BBC interview, Harry says of his betrothed, that the Queen’s corgis love her, and also quips that he’s “spent the last 33 years being barked at — this one walks in, absolutely nothing.” The corgis even laid at Meghan’s feet while she had tea with the Queen!
Despite being in with the Queen’s corgi menagerie, Meghan hasn’t forgotten about her own pups. One of her dogs has already joined her in the UK. Her other dog is still in the US, staying with a close friend, but we’re sure it’s only a matter of time until he joins her as well. We can picture it now, a palace full of pooches! Congrats to the new couple and especially congrats to Prince Harry, as he is next in line to be the dog-dad to these sweet puppers!
