Let me start by saying this is not an advertisement, this is not a paid endorsement, and this is not a product I was given to review. This is simply an article, written by an animal lover, about a pet carrier that she purchased with her own money and can’t stop raving about.
I first saw the carrier on the New York City subway. A fellow passenger was sitting with it on her lap, a Maltese snoozing inside. I was in the market for a new pet carrier because I was moving my cat cross-country and wanted to ensure she’d be comfy for the long flight. I squinted my eyes and memorized the label with the little sheep logo: sleepypod.
Once I got home and Googled it, I knew I was in trouble because it was billed as a “luxury pet carrier.” And when I saw it averaged at $189.99, I audibly scoffed. But then I kept reading.
“No need to buy multiple products because Sleepypod is three products in one: a carrier, a pet bed, and a safe car seat. Ultra plush bedding surrounded by a luggage-grade, ballistic nylon base forms the bed that easily becomes a carrier by simply zipping on its mesh dome. In a car, the crash-tested Sleepypod becomes a safe car seat. On the road and at your destination away from home, a pet remains in its own bed through the entire journey.”
I was already planning on getting my cat a new pet bed upon relocation (her old one was gross and beyond repair). And I also knew that once we got to California, we’d be doing a lot more road trips. The Sleepypod really did sound like the perfect solution for all my needs, but I couldn’t bring myself to pay almost $200. And then I remembered that Craigslist existed.
I ran a quick search for “Sleepypod” and ta-da! There was the beautiful carrier, in red, listed gently used for $60 in TriBeCa. I snagged it.
Now that I have used the Sleepypod for a few months and know how many cat conundrums it solves, I would have gladly paid the $189.99. Here’s why:
It’s the perfect cat bed.
Typical cat beds are soft and malleable, but my cat (and most cats) love a feeling of containment. You know how they always sleep in boxes? The Sleepypod has the hard outer shell of a box, but the circular shape and ultraplush lining of a bed. As soon as I opened it, my cat called it home.
It’s the perfect cat carrier.
Getting my cat in and out of her carrier used to be a nightmare. I had to chase her down and cram her into an undersized, sideways opening. With the Sleepypod, I just gently put the top over her while she’s sleeping, and zip into place. While she still doesn’t love being locked inside, she’s much calmer — probably because she’s in her normal bed, covered in her normal scent.
It’s walking — and driving — friendly.
Obviously the Sleepypod is great for the car (it’s crash-tested), but it’s also awesome if you want to walk it to the vet (or the park, for dogs). When you carry it like a purse, the hard outer shell moves with your hip, so you’re only bumping the carrier, and not your pet.
It’s ideal for air travel.
Although Sleepypod doesn’t tout this feature, the carrier (in medium) fit comfortably under my airplane seat. And the easy on-off zip of the mesh top made getting her in and out through TSA a breeze (which is not typically an easy feat for cats).
Although the Sleepypod is a pricey purchase, I now understand that it’s worth every penny for how many headaches it’s solved. Having to take my cat out of the house has always been a nightmare, and now it’s no problem whatsoever. The Sleepypod is, hands-down, the one pet product I never want to be without!
