How Did Kate Chastain Survive a Shipwreck? Chips and Rosé
Apparently it really works (and it does sound delightful).
If you're going to find yourself shipwrecked, it helps to be a professional yachtie. That's what Below Deck's chief stew Kate Chastain found when she was — and this is actually a true story — wrecked somewhere near the Caribbean.
“The speedboat I was on, we were on our way down to Turks and Caicos, just the captain, his friend and I, and the captain wanted to cut corners and get there quickly," Kate told Page Six. "And he hit a coral reef and we were shipwrecked for three days on a desert island."
Well, that's where her eight years of experience, as well as her presence of mind, came in handy. She remained calm and assessed the situation. And it turns out it wasn't that dire after all.
“We had like two boxes of potato chips and, luckily, about four cases of Domaine Ott rosé wine," she told Page Six. "So actually it was like a mini-vacation." And we admit... being trapped on a pristine, remote island with #roséallday doesn't sound half bad.
Naturally, the whole thing wasn't a picnic — and Kate did lose some cherished possessions in the chaos as the boat took on water.
“I went down to my closet and I was like, ‘Leather jacket, you’re coming with me. Okay, Pucci dress, I can wear you out.’ I don’t know where I thought I was going, I was going to a desert island if I survived. But my first instinct was to grab my most treasured clothes,” she said.
The group was eventually found after the captain's brothers came looking for them on a boat from Miami and gave them a tow back.
So all's well that ends well — minus a few sartorial sacrifices to the sea.
