Balenciaga Sold Out of Its $1,100 Tote That Literally Looks like a Shopping Bag

This is meta: Balenciaga's newest It-bag looks exactly like a Balenciaga shopping bag. Exactly like it, except that it's made out of calfskin with Nappa leather handles and silver hardware, according to Time — and it costs $1,100. When you buy the shopping bag, do they put it in another shopping bag? That's what we want to know. 

Balenciaga designer Demna Gvasalia is known for "elevating" run-of-the-mill items into luxury goods, like his $2,145 version of Ikea's $1 bag. 

Apparently people like this sort of thing, because the $1,100 Balenciaga shopping bag is currently sold out on Collette's site. Balenciaga's crazy bag is raising all sorts of eyebrows on social media, but W reminds us it's not the first brand to try this move: Chanel released its own very similar shopping bag tote in 2009.
