Celebrity Manicurists Predict That These Trends Will Rule 2017

Good news: some of these styles take two minutes or less.

By Tamara Palmer

It's not too early to think about what you should put on your fingernails next year. And with all the, er, unusual manicures we've seen this year, it's refreshing to know that experts are looking towards more natural looks—and a return to nostalgic fun—in 2017.

Opalescence

"A trend that I'm encouraging for 2017 is mimicking what I've been seeing in makeup: Sheer sheens with a hint of opalescence," says Essie's celebrity manicurist Michelle Saunders, who has created expert nail looks for stars like Gigi Hadid, Taraji P. Henson, and Kate Moss. "It gives the natural nail a gleaming highlight. It's a red carpet favorite!"

The Return of Nail Art

"I think nail art could make a comeback next year," predicts Kimmie Kyees, a manicurist of choice for stars like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Kylie Jenner, and Erika Girardi. "There are a lot of stickers and nail coatings that are able to give people instant nail art. I'd love to see something like that happen again."

Minimal Black Stripes

The spring nail proposed by Vera Wang at her recent runway show is simply a bold, vertical black line in the middle of a bare nail that has been picked up by Glamour as one of the hottest upcoming seasonal trends. Think of it as a brilliant, unfinished goth look.

Thin It Out

Newsflash: The Eighties are over. "I really hope people stop doing the super wide and thick acrylic nail," says Kimmie. "I'm more into a natural-looking nail."

Vibrant Multicolors

Michelle Saunders is going bold in the new year with "graphic but simple lines, leaving negative space for a modern edge. You'll see this look on our favorite pop stars," she says.

Cuticle jewelry

Rodarte debuted a fingernail style with minimal but noticeable flash on the spring '17 fashion runway. The look was a glittery U of gold on the bottom of the nail bed that Elle labeled "cuticle jewelry." This should be the perfect technique for everyday people who want a stylish look, but don't have the time or patience to paint all of their nails.
