Designer Rebecca Minkoff Shares Her Most Regrettable Back-to-School Look
Plus, details on her free-spirited new collection.
Designer Rebecca Minkoff recently stopped by Nordstrom to chat with shoppers about her Fall 2016 collection. Inspired by the group of bohemian travelers known as the gypset, the bags, shoes, and leather jackets are spruced up with details such as tassels and suede.
This time of year—and especially during New York Fashion Week—Rebecca is busy planning her own show. Thats' why she always carries a Blackberry ("the battery lasts longer!") and a Mophie in her Julian backpack. She's also picking up fall wardrobe staples for herself (her own Brutus leather jacket is a piece she particularly loves, because it can go "over lots and lots of layers") and tweaking her beauty routine in preparation for the cold. Though she loves Tom Ford's tobacco-vanilla fragrance any time of year, she'll be adding face oil back into her skincare regime. "I found out that in the winter you should always use an oil for your face," she shares. "It you use water, it freezes, and can cause cracks in your skin."
As a mother of two, fall also means back-to-school shopping. "My son is going to kindergarten for the first time this year, so it's a big deal for us, and we're going to do a whole thing for him," she says. "He's very opinionated, so it doesn't matter what I say. He's into very tight, short shirts, and tight, ripped jeans." Rebecca can remember having her own opinions back in the school days, though her taste veered more toward hippie than rocker chic. One year, she recalls, "I had just come back from a hippy summer camp, so I thought I was going to be really cool by wearing Birkenstocks, armpit hair, a vintage t-shirt, and some Dickies. That, to me, was the coolest thing in the world."
Of course, retro trends remain a thing, with '90s influence popping up everywhere. "I'm definitely not over-plucking my eyebrows," she laughs. "But, I will do a lot of black polish, and the choker's back. So I think I'll try that."
