Golden Globes 2017: Are Custom Tuxes The New Evening Gown?
The new rule of red-carpet dressing? "Just be yourself."
At just over a week old, 2017 has already delivered a fashion-packed red carpet. And at tonight's Golden Globe Awards, celebs certainly didn't throw away the opportunity to make a big impression for the first major awards show of the year.
Though the carpet was filled with plenty of princess-y gowns, a few of Tinsletown's leading ladies made a style statement by borrowing from the boys. It takes a certain kind of woman to own this look. And, judging from past red-carpet queens who have sported the style—think Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon—that kind of woman is one-hundred percent confident in her own skin. Here's proof.
Kathryn Hahn owned the carpet in a black tux that played peek-a-boo with black leather bra. She wore her hair down in loose waves, and frosted her lips with a pretty shade of pink. Kathryn kept her nails neutral with a swipe of ballet pink—which set a nice, neutral canvas for that silver statement ring.
Octavia Spencer added peep-toe shoes and shoulder-grazing earrings to her midnight-blue pantsuit. Unlike Kathryn's loose, trouser-cut pants, this look was perfectly cropped at the star's ankles—and showed off a chic, dark pedicure.
Evan Rachel Wood made a statement with her classically dapper look by Altuzarra. Evan Rachel and her stylist, Samantha McMillen, found inspiration for the look in famous gents like David Bowie. (Check out this vintage Bowie snap Samantha posted earlier tonight.)
But, the style was also meant as a shout-out for the girls. “I’m not trying to protest dresses,” Evan Rachel told Ryan Seacrest during her red-carpet interview. “But, I wanted to make sure young girls and women know that it’s not a requirement. You don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to. Just be yourself because you’re worth more than that.”
