Hear a Top Celebrity Hairstylist Dish on Working With Taraji P. Henson and Porsha Williams

Here's what went down before the updo.

By Jenny Berg

Taraji P. Henson is known for two things: being a great actress (and we mean great), and having a fantastic sense of style. Part of the actress's allure lies in her constantly changing—and always on-point—hair. So we were psyched when her numero uno hairstylist, Tym Wallace, agreed to take a trip down hair-memory-lane with us. (Yep: such a lane exists. And it's scented with hairspray.) Here's what he had to say about some of Taraji's most perfectly coiffed moments. And, he's also worked with a certain Real Houswives of Atlanta beauty as well. Scroll on to find out which one!

1. CNN Heroes Awards

"The previous day, I cut this amazingly chic center-part bob and it was great—until I noticed that I needed to make minor touch-ups. The camera doesn’t lie, and sees everything. Me being the perfectionist that I am, I had to sit her down to fix it. She didn't see what I saw, so she kept moving around making it a huge challenge to fix the last-minute change. With a little nudging and coaxing from the rest of the glam squad, I finally was able sit her down and perfect the cut. My inspiration was he iconic Vidal Sassoon and his signature classic bob-cut style, as well as celebrity hairstylist and industry colleague Nikki Nelms, who has created chic styles for songstress Solange Knowles."

2. Taraji’s White Hot Holidays Special on FOX

"My nerves were on high because we only had eight-minute changes between hair, makeup, and wardrobe. The changes had to be subtle, but I still wanted the looks to be strong. I'm always inspired by my roots and urban street style. Growing up in Chicago, I always watched young girls braid each other’s hair into cool and funky patterns. I often incorporate these styles into my work. I gathered the hair and created one simple braid into a low ponytail, and created a little distress for an effortless look."

3. American Music Awards

"For this event, I wanted to create a pretty simple look with a little pizazz for an unforgettable red carpet moment. The ponytail is a forever classic look, but I wanted a WOW factor to turn heads. I decided to add Rapunzel-length hair, which was something that she had never done before. This was a pretty easy day, other than all the hair that was sent to me didn't make it in time, so I was scrambling around for replacements and Karen Mitchell of True Indian Hair came to the rescue with 36 inches of beautiful tresses."

4. Democratic National Convention

"Porsha [Williams] is so funny and such a gem to work with. She came in with these long tresses. Instantly, I said to myself, 'Let’s crop this into a fun and playful textured bob.' It’s so fitting to her personality. She was so nervous and apprehensive but after sharing examples, she finally let me cut it. She was very observant and hands on throughout the entire process."
