So, You Want to "Be a Helena Bonham Carter?"

Paging Vivienne Westwood...

By Jenny Berg

It was the meme heard 'round the internet. Earlier this week, Anne Hathaway posted a photo to Instagram that read: "In a World of Kardashians...Be a Helena Bonham Carter." Well. That didn't go so well. Shortly thereafter, the unfailingly polite Alice Through the Looking Glass star removed the post, explaining: "It never occurred to me I was pitting anyone against each other. Not my style. Peace x" Moral of the story: The red carpet has room for body-clinging Balmain and evening gowns with sunglasses. But, just in case you do want to be Helena Bonham Carter (guilty), here are a few of her signature style moves.

1. Sunglasses Are Always a Good Idea

Her shades are very much intended. Helena routinely wears sunglasses with red-carpet couture. The silver pair featured here, at the 2014 BAFTA awards, are vintage.

2. Hair Accessories Are Your Friends

Helena loves piling her locks with bold hair accessories. For the UK premiere of Cinderella, she capped her 'do with a giant, glittering butterfly.

She's also experimented with floral motifs.

And she knows her way around a veil.

3. Wear Tiny Hats

While she likes her hair accessories large, she tends to go for teeny hats. (Squint—it's there.) PS: Rule 3b: Corsets. Corsets are always good.

4. Two words: Vivienne. Westwood.

The designer's modern punk aesthetic is perfectly suited to Helena's tastes. She's stepped out often in voluminous, asymmetrical Vivienne Westwood dresses. And for the 2011 Golden Globes, she famously paired her dress with mismatched shoes (pictured above.)

Also important: in Helena's world, an even hem is a boring hem.

5. Carry a Statement Clutch

Helena doesn't store her keys and lipstick just anywhere. For the 2010 Alice in Wonderland premiere, she carried a clutch with a Queen of Hearts theme.

She's also toted a bejeweled pair of bright-red lips, designed by Lulu Guinness.
