They're Baaaaack! Fanny Packs Are In Again...and We're A-Okay With That

They were in, they were out, and like all things in fashion, they're in again.

By Courtney Thompson

Stop what you’re doin’, cause I’m about to ruin, the image and the style that you’re used to. That’s right, your 2017 vibe is about to go out the window and your 1990 swagger is taking its place. The reason why? Fanny packs are back. Or bum bags, if you’re British. Or waist bags, if you’re a designer who cringes at the thought of using the word “fanny” in a product name.

Regardless of what you call them, the hands-free bag dads and coaches and tourists wore back in the day is making a major return this season, thanks to haute versions from the likes of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney and more. One only has to look at Kendall Jenner—and her sisters and her not-so-secret boyfriend A$AP Rocky—to see that the celebrity circuit is fully on-board with the resurgence. And why wouldn’t they be? While they were utterly dorky and often ugly as sin, the fanny packs of the ’90s were so clutch! A place to store your wallet, Chapstick, keys and cassette tapes! A bag that was easily accessible and didn’t cripple your shoulder with its weight!

When given the option today, we will over-pack our purses—and fanny packs force us to whittle down our on-the-go items to necessities-only. Which is refreshing, to say the least. And what’s even better is that today’s version of the old-school bag is sleeker, cuter and somehow cooler. (We can thank Jenner for that.)

Below we found 20 cute options that go with every look you’re rolling out—whether it be with a little black dress for date night (in which case you’d go with the Clare V) or with jeans, sneakers and crop top while you run errands (for that, you’d pick the Opening Ceremony paisley number). Regardless of which you choose, just be sure bust a move while wearing them…but def don’t go chasing waterfalls, mmk?
