Mel B Speaks Out About Mariah Carey's NYE Performance: "Maybe She Doesn’t Have That Voice Anymore"
The former Spice Girl had some thoughts about Mimi's buzzy moment.
Just when you thought the world had moved on from that unforgettable Mariah Carey performance on New Year's Eve, the subject has once again become the topic of discussion, thanks to the one and only Scary Spice, aka Mel B. The former Spice Girl stopped by The Real this week, where she was asked about the buzzy moment, since she was there to see it all for herself in person in Times Square, instead of on live TV like the rest of us.
“I was on the nest platform next to her,” she said. (She was on hand to co-host on New Year's Eve with Carson Daly.) “So she was right there and I was watching going, ‘What is going on over there?’ Because I was trying to lip sync along to her song because I love Mariah. Then it all stopped and I looked over and I couldn’t believe what I was actually seeing.”
Mel then explained why the whole sequence of events — which included Mariah ranting about her career, not singing very much, and seeming to be plagued by technical difficulties (which later became a he said, she said beef)— were particularly surprising to her.
“As a performer, as somebody on TV, if something happens, you just keep it going. Your first reaction is to not let silence go too long. I was in complete shock," she said. "I was like, ‘Why did you let that happen?’ And this is Mariah who is an amazing singer, an amazing performer. Maybe she doesn’t have that voice anymore and I hate to say it, but maybe that was part of the [problem].”
