Meryl Streep Sat Down With Anna Wintour, and Yes, The Devil Wears Prada Came Up

The legends hilariously skirted the issue.

By Jenny Berg

When two legends sit down for a  tête-à-tête, the conversation is bound to be juicy. And when the two icons in question are Meryl Streep and Anna Wintour, things only get better. After landing the cover of Vogue's December issue, the Oscar-winning actress popped by the editor-in-chief's office to discuss everything from politics to Harvey Weinstein, and — yes — Streep's role as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada. (Refresher: the role was a thinly veiled impression of Wintour.) Well, OK: the topic kind of came up.

When Wintour asked Streep to name the most challenging role she's ever played, Streep hesitated before her eyes lit up. "Well, I should say [you]," she joked, pointing a finger at Wintour. The famous editor shut that down stat: "No, we're not going there, Meryl," she said, albiet with a smile.

Luckily, there was lots else to talk about. In her forthcoming film The Post, Streep plays another publishing icon. She'll take on the role of Katharine Graham, who led The Washington Post for more than 20 yearsand oversaw the outlet's coverage of the Watergate Scandal.

Wintour was close with Graham. "She was so tall, and so imposing, and spoke so well," Wintour recalled, adding that she was "terrified" of her eventual friend of mentor when she first met her.

A woman who could intimidate Anna Wintour — we'll gladly pay for tickets to see that! We're also excited to pick up a copy of the December Vogue, which features a stunning image of Meryl. "Look at that décolletage," the actress remarked, upon seeing her cover shot for the first time. Watch the meeting of the two greats, below.
