Let’s be honest—it really doesn’t require much “stuff” to own a dog. Bowls for food and water, maybe a collar and a leash. For some breeds, and some dog owners, that’s about it. Then there is the other end of the spectrum. We’ve all seen examples of outrageously pampered pooches…the ones with Italian leather carrying cases, diamond-encrusted collars, gourmet food delivery services and custom furniture. If you’re like me, you fall somewhere in the middle—not a complete minimalist, but definitely not into extravagant excesses.
But I do love discovering new, practical things for my dog, especially if they actually make my life easier! So earlier this month I visited the Global Pet Expo in Orlando to check out some of the newest products from the event’s more than 1,000 exhibitors. And the experience resulted in one “Why didn’t I think of that?!” moment after another. Here are eight of my favorite finds.
Qwizl
This interactive treat-dispensing toy won first place in the Expo’s New Product Showcase. It’s been designed to hold treats tightly inside so both the treats and the playtime last longer. Use it with soft or hard treats. It comes in two sizes and three colors and is dishwasher safe.
Max & Lucy Dry Dog Shampoo
Get your dog clean and smelling great without a drop of water. This dry shampoo is made with lavender essential oil, so it’s completely natural. The box includes 4 dry shampoo sachets and a reusable powder bulb to make application easy.
Gooby Raincoat
No need to stay inside on a rainy day. This adjustable raincoat will keep your dog dry and comfortable (and keep you from having to towel him off when you come in!). It’s got a clear visor so your dog can still see where he’s going, and there’s adjustable metal piping and a Velcro fastener so you can ensure it fits properly. The jacket is available in seven sizes, from extra small through 3 XL.
Dexas Mudbuster
It’s great to watch your dog play outside…until he comes in and brings some of that “outside” with him. Keep your floors clean with this ingenious paw cleaner that comes in three sizes. Just add water to the easy-to-grip tumbler, insert your dog’s paw and gently twist the container. The soft, thick silicone bristles inside remove dirt and mud. Rinse it out and it’s ready to use again.
LeashGear EZ Walker
Why carry multiple things when you can have what you need in convenient product? In addition to a sturdy nylon leash, this has a poop bag dispenser (with one roll of bags included), a water- and odor-resistant waste compartment to hold those dirty bags until you get to a trash can and an accessory pocket to hold your keys, phone, dog treats and more. The leash comes in two sizes and three colors.
Suitical Dry Cooling Vest
Summer is just around the corner so grab one of these new cooling vests to keep your dog from overheating. Just fill it with fresh water to activate and it will immediately start cooling down to as low as 59 degrees for up to three days. The vest comes in two sizes and is machine washable.
Snappy Snoozers
Whether you use it while traveling or at home, this air mattress for your dog provides a comfortable, easy-to-clean resting spot. The quilted cover snaps on to the mattress, which means you can easily remove it for washing, while the mattress itself can be cleaned with a sanitizing wipe. The beds are available in two sizes and each one comes with a travel tote, two replacement quilts and an air pump.
My Dog Nose It
My Dog Nose It, makers of a sunscreen balm for dogs’ snouts, now has a body and coat spray. The non-greasy, alcohol-free spray protects your pet from UVA and UVB rays—which can be damage their skin and cause sunburn and skin cancer. And unlike sunscreens made for humans, this is free of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which can be harmful to pets.
