Newsflash: We'll All Be Wearing Bardot Hair and Balloon Sleeves Next Year

We're already getting excited for spring.

By Adele Chapin

Off-the-shoulder tops dominated our summer in 2016, but will they still be hot in 2017? For the answer, we turned to Stacy Smallwood, owner of super chic Charleston boutique and online shop Hampden. Stacy has also dressed stars like Busy Philipps, and she’s fresh off a trend-scouting trip to New York. “Having just gotten back from NY for Pre-Fall 2017 Market, I definitely have a hold on what is coming ahead for the next six months,” she said. Here's fashion intel straight from Stacy:

It's Still All About Shoulders

“One that is definitely here to stay for 2017 is the emphasis on the shoulder!” Stacy says. She loves the cold shoulder trend from designers like Monse (the duo who are also the new designers for Oscar de la Renta). Another off-the-shoulder option is Caroline Constas's blouses. “You might have seen this 'it' piece on bloggers last season, but this top is going to be everywhere this Spring 2017,” Stacy says.

If You Must Wear Sleeves, Go Oversize

“A new trend to look out for this spring season is an emphasis on sleeves! From ruffles to a balloon sleeve, you can keep your skinny jeans on and let your tops speak for themselves."

Slip-On Shoes For The Win

2017 might be a good year for comfortable shoes, according to Stacy. "Mules are the IT shoe of the season and the Nicholas Kirkwood mule is the most comfortable one on the market—and comes in so many different colors!" she said.

Statement Earrings Are In

"When you think of jewelry this year, it is all about the earring," Stacy says. "Keep the other pieces simple and make a statement with these from Stella McCartney. They even showed it super 80's style by only selling one. Or try these statement earrings from Lizzie Fortunato are sure to complete any cold-shoulder look."

Pair Your Off-The-Shoulder Top and Statement Earrings With Brigitte Bardot Hair

As for hair, hold on to your lob. Giles Robinson, stylist for Color Wow says that it's here to stay, as long as the lob is has "clean lines and not fussy." He also advocates a "modern Bardot" style. "It has a bit of a lift, a bit of a twist, and the front is flat with an undove wave," Robinson says. Shoulder-baring top, statement earrings, Bardot hair—now that's an entire 2017 ensemble!
