Old-School Swimsuits Are Back & We Couldn't Be Happier About That

The one-piece hasn’t gone anywhere in the past several decades per se, but it has typically been reserved as a backup choice for most. Like, when you were feeling bloated or hadn’t lost those post-pregnancy pounds, or in the event you were going to a pool party at your boss’ house and wanted to show as little skin as possible. It was the most modest route one could go when a swimsuit was required.

But times are a changing, and like most things in fashion, designers are garnering their inspiration from trends of yore. In this case: The 80s. That’s right, the bathing suit that epitomized all that was sexy in the 1980s and early 90s—we’re talking about the one-piece, people—is making a big splash this summer. And unlike the sedate options in recent years, this current crop of one-pieces is once again oozing sexiness via high cut legs, super-low-scoop-backs and in some cases, a bit of side boob. Oh yeah, and a whole lot of butt cheeks. One only has to look at any of Kardashian/Jenner vacations—or bathing suit-clad selfies—to confirm this is a legit trend. (Side note: Thongs are also back in a major way, get ready to see a sea of buns at the beach this summer.)

Here we’ve rounded up some of our favorite takes on the trend, from preppy with stripes to monokinis with cut outs to mesh panels galore. And given their ability to hide tummies and elongate legs, these cuties are also super flattering—done and done. Pair with a tunic and a tote and you’re good to go.
