Yes, There's Now a Mermaid Frappuccino—But You'll Need to Head to This Country to Get One
“Quiero un Mermaid Frappuccino, por favor.”
Remember the Unicorn Frappuccino from Starbucks? Of course you do. Even if you never tasted one of those alien-looking sugar bombs, you couldn't avoid them in your newsfeed, in the regular news, or in random conversations overheard in the office, on the street, and just about EVERYWHERE.
They were everywhere and all over everything when they dropped—until finally, thank god, they weren’t. But the mystical frapps were a big hit for the ‘bucks (can we call it the ‘bucks?), even if baristas didn’t always love making them.
Well, start getting mentally prepared, Starbucks employees, because the Seattle-based coffee chain has jumped headfirst back into the mythological flavor pool to create their newest alien-colored coffee creation…The Mermaid Frappuccino.
Behold all its…mermaid-y…glory? Declaring it #MermaidSeason, Starbucks announced the new whimsically colored beverage this week, which Grub Street reports “combines the Frappuccino cream base with melon and, apparently, some ‘magical flavor from the sea,’ then coats it in a thick layer of blue and pink sprinkles.” But the real kicker? This colorful drink is only available in Mexico.
According to a press release, the ingredients needed to make the drink (mermaid scales?) aren’t available in the U.S., but the sea foam green concoction will be available at stores below the border for anyone with serious mermaid cravings that can drive down or book last-minute flights during the week they’re available.
At the moment, it’s unclear whether any part of this is a marketing move to get people in the U.S. clamoring for it, or if it’ll actually never be available stateside. If not, you’ll just have to settle for the secret menu version of the Mermaid Frappuccino that went viral back in May.
