Wait! Pantone Wants Us To Wear "Greenery" in 2017?

So, it's not the world's most flattering color. Here's how to cope.

By Bryce Gruber

If you're following fashion and design news, you may know that Pantone named a bright, somewhat-pukey shade called "Greenery" as the hue everyone will be wearing in 2017. If you're a 1960s carpet or kale-smoothie fan, this is great news for you. For everyone else, the reality of being faced with so many green dresses in stores could be kind of daunting.

In the interest of staying on top of trends, we must be versatile souls, so we broke down some of the best ways to wear Greenery without looking washed out, sea sick, or like you're part of a wild Easter fashion experiment.

1. Stick to select, limited Greenery-hued pieces

"If styling Greenery near your face makes your skin yellow or sallow, opt to wear your Greenery in a pant," offers veteran LA-based stylist Laurie Brucker. "Or you can layer a Greenery printed scarf that plays up your skin tone more vibrantly."

2. Skip the clothes, wear Greenery as makeup

Celebrity makeup arist Jessika Bekteshi suggests that forgetting Greenery on your clothes and opting for bold makeup choices may be the best way to wear this daring shade. "For eyeshadow, a few shimmery shades in the Greenery family applied to the upper and lower lids is perfection," she says. "Make sure to blend and soften the edges. Then apply a black eyeliner to your waterline, curl your lashes, and add a few coats of mascara."

3. Soften the shade a bit

Green in general is trending for 2017, and as long as you stay away from last year's jewel tone shades (like emerald, for example), you'll be on top of the trend. Try wearing various shades of Greenery, sage, or lime to the gym first, to work up your confidence. Plus, a little bright green can do wonders for Zumba-class morale.

4. Finally your purse can match your salad

"For fashion beginners, I recommend starting with accessories like necklaces, shoes, bags, belts, bangles, and earrings in this new fresh color," shares Laurie. "But, choose just one! It's an easy way to dabble in Greenery without feeling like you're trying too hard."

5. When in doubt, just reach for peridot

This ancient gemstone was a favorite of Egyptian royalty, and happens to match this year's Pantone shade perfectly. Load your collarbone, wrists, ears, and fingers with sparkly green baubles to get your trend on. Plus, if you buy the good stuff, it may even count as an investment.

6. Mix it with the right colors

You may think that anything goes with a little black dress, and you're right. But, the updated way to wear Greenery is by wearing it with other colors, Laurie says. Be a little bolder with your choices to give the hue a more modern feel. You can, for example, pair the bright green hue with white, navy blue, or brighter tones like hot pink.
