If you're the type of mother I am, you don’t realize you need to buy your kid new clothes until his pants look like capris and his shirt like a crop top. And being that cooler weather is upon us, I figured now was as good a time as any to invest in some new toddler clothes. But where to start?

Usually clothes shopping for my son involves me surfing the internet around midnight for random items on sale, which inevitably means when I receive the order I have no recollection (and don’t even like) half of what I’ve bought. Enter kid clothing subscription boxes, a true game changer!

We’re all familiar with the Stitch Fixes and Le Totes of the world, so it was only a matter of time before these fun fashion boxes made their way into the kid world.

I (and my 2-year-old son) tested out five of the hottest subscription boxes to give you the low down on how they stack up in the style game for kids — and how they take out the stress of shopping for mamas.

Mac and Mia

If you’re looking for a classic or timeless look for your child, Mac and Mia will deliver. My son’s box was a mix of classic looks for fall–plaid, sweaters, and the softest jeans you’ve ever felt. The box also came with fun stickers for my son and was the only box to come with socks, which he desperately needed.

How it works: Answer a quick quiz, get paired with a personal stylist, and get 6-9 pieces that’ll reflect your little one’s personal style. Easily return whatever you don’t love for free.

Sizing: This box will take you from the newborn days all the way to 6T.

How it’s different: Mac and Mia highlights timely and topical trends, like back to school, and fills your box with the latest and greatest so your kid’s clothes are always on point.

Pricing: There’s a $20 styling fee for each box, but if you keep at least two of the items, the fee will be applied to your order. Keep it all and you’ll get 15% off!

Rockets of Awesome

Preppy and sporty are how I described my 2-year-old boy to Rockets of Awesome and they delivered perfectly on that description. I received a mix of button downs, chinos, pullovers, and joggers — all with tasteful nods of awesome (think rocket ships, comets, florescent colors, and gorillas!) on them. The box the clothes come in is also super cute and provided days of entertainment for my son.

How it works: Take a fun online quiz about your child’s style and they send you 8 hand-picked pieces. Then, you pick your favorite pieces and return whatever you don’t want for free.

Sizing: This box is for toddlers to tweens starting at size 2 and going up to 14.

How it’s different: You get to review and approve your box before it gets shipped to you — it's the only box that allowed you to do so.

Price: There’s a $20 service fee per box that goes towards anything you keep. If you decide to keep all 8 pieces, you get everything for $150 (average savings of $70).

Fitted Tot

From basic long-sleeve tees and cute hipster shirts to solid-colored pants, everything in this box was able to be mixed and matched. Prints were also simple enough to easily work with clothes already in his closet.

How it works: Build your style profile, receive a monthly box of 5-8 items, pay for what you keep and return the rest.

Sizing: From newborn through toddler, this box works for size 0-3 months all the way to size 6.

How it’s different: Stylists pick coordinating items to make sure your child’s fashion is easy and fun.

Price: A $20 styling fee is charged with your shipment, but if you keep two or more of the items, the fee goes towards your purchase. Love everything? You’ll save 15 percent if you keep it all. The average price for the whole box is $180.

Little Starters

Stripes, stars, and lightning bolts — my little one was super stoked to proudly tell me he saw stars on the box and on one of the shirt and pants he received. This box definitely had a cool, California-dreaming vibe that is comfortable and casual. All the pieces also look like they would work easily together.

How it works: Fill out a style profile for your kiddo and Little Starters will select 5-7 cool pieces that are easily mixed and matched. You can choose from three frequency options: just one box, 4 boxes per year, or one box every month. Returns are simple and free and you only get charged for the items you keep.

Sizing: Perfect for little tykes–0-3 months up to 4 years.

How it’s different: Fabrics are super soft and responsibly sourced, meaning no harsh chemicals. New styles and prints are introduced every 4 weeks!

Price: Average price per item is $12.50 if you keep the entire box.
