The 'Kathy' Afternoon Dance Break

Learn the staff's secret to staving off fatigue.

By Staff

It’s pretty hard to have low energy in the Kathy offices. But sometimes we need an afternoon pick-me-up. Luckily, Kathy’s usually here to do her Cher impression. Or we’ll turn on Shahs of Sunset and stare at Reza’s bushy mustache for an hour. Sometimes, if we’re lucky, Reza’s mustache is next to MJ, who’s wearing a bikini that’s fifteen sizes too small for her.

But sometimes Kathy’s not here. And sometimes MJ’s wearing a totally sensible one-piece swimsuit. And we get drowsy.

One day, one of our producers, Karen, suggested we get up and do some light stretching. Light stretching turned into moderate stretching. Moderate stretching turned into hopping up and down. I decided we could use some inspirational music to hop to, so I played Gonna Fly Now (A.K.A. the theme from Rocky).

Hopping up and down turned into a full-fledged dance circle, and every day since then we’ve had an afternoon dance break, whether we needed it or not.

I’m usually in charge of the music. I’ve learned that there’s an art to song selection, and that you can’t make everyone happy. For instance, if I play Lady Gaga instead of Madonna, John (our Talent Segment Producer) will throw a tape dispenser at my head.

Kevin (our Post Production Manager) likes to stop by to shake his head in disgust over the fact we’re not dancing to Megadeth. And Nick (our other Talent Segment Producer) would prefer that every song we dance to hail from a Broadway musical. But we tried to dance to I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables, and it’s impossible. I don’t think anyone could pull that off (except Channing Tatum).

Who has the best dance moves? One of our producers, Campbell, owns that title. She’s also incredibly good at intentional bad dancing. Worst dance moves? Me. Which is why I stay in my seat and play deejay.

By the way, I use the term “deejay” very loosely, and that was even before Briana (one of our Associate Producers) was kind enough to say, “I mean, you’re just clicking around iTunes, so, like, you’re not a deejay or anything.” Briana’s there to make sure I never feel too good about myself.

Anyway, a list of the songs we’ve danced to thus far is below. Feel free to leave us some song suggestions.

Gonna Fly Now, Bill Conti
And We Danced, Macklemore
Take Your Mama, Scissor Sisters
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Michael Jackson
Castle, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
O.P.P., Naughty By Nature
Just Dance, Lady Gaga
Holiday, Madonna
ABC, The Jackson 5
Dec. 4/Oh What a Night, DJ Topcat
